LIFESTYLE – MEDITATION
Meditation can help people manage symptoms of medical conditions, especially those worsened by stress. Although some researchers believe that it is not yet possible to draw conclusions about the benefits of meditation, there is growing scientific research that supports its health benefits. Some conditions that may benefit from meditation include anxiety, asthma, cancer, chronic pain, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep problems, and tension headaches. It is important to talk to your healthcare provider about the pros and cons of using meditation if you have any of these conditions or other health problems.
Meditation is an umbrella term for many ways to achieve a relaxed state of being, including guided meditation, mantra meditation, mindfulness meditation, Qi gong, Tai chi, Transcendental meditation, and yoga. Different types of meditation may include different features to help you meditate, such as focused attention, relaxed breathing, a quiet setting, a comfortable position, and an open attitude.
You can practice meditation easily on your own or attend special meditation centers or group classes led by trained instructors. Meditation can be made as formal or informal as you like and can be incorporated into your daily routine. Even just a few minutes of quality time for meditation can be beneficial. Some ways to practice meditation on your own include breathing deeply and focusing all your attention on your breathing, or scanning your body and becoming aware of your body’s various sensations.
