REIGN OF HEARTS, ALTAR OF MIRAGES
Gallerie Nvya is pleased to present Gurmeet Marwah’s solo Reign of Hearts, Altar of Mirages.
Embodying satire and whimsy, Marwah’s work explores human psyche, expressing fragments of fragility, uncertainty and stability — or perhaps its lack thereof. There is a sense of reliable static, posed questions, and an urgency to navigate. With an ingrained personal politics, an internal brawl, the idea is to document. Document instances perceived, judged, measured and endured. Marwah explains his need to inhale experiences drawn from his immediate environment, exhaling them in fragments through mark making. For him, his works are cryptic records put forth as brief, snippets of fictional narratives.
The artist uses a controlled palette. Works in charcoal on linen, have a monochromatic temperament, interrupted by the brightness of occasional crimson reds and azure blues. Titles gesture at the precarity of sentimentalities and a search for heartsease. One sees a shift away from the didactics of hefty enquires, to simplify, giving subjects and objects equal spatial prominence. He looks at his work in the light of being democratic, which are not rigid in character. There is a playful innocence to his compositions, alongside a complimenting, contradictory seriousness which is revealed when studied up-close. His imp formations, owls and monkeys stem from everyday locution, carefully revealing bits of Marwah’s motivations. Marwah keeps in focus, a critique of societal constructs and materialistic aspirations. While touching on the impermanence of it all. Through his work he not only unveils his personal dilemmas but also nudges the viewer to introspect and question the fabric in which routine situates, as he grapples with personal and occurring accounts.
